Abstract

This study explores the mathematical activities and concepts embedded in the process of crafting the traditional Kolotik musical instrument in Beber Village, Ciamis, West Java, through the lens of ethnomathematics. Addressing the limited research on the integration of mathematics in local cultural artifacts, this study seeks to highlight the relevance of mathematics within indigenous craftsmanship and its potential as a contextual learning resource. Employing a qualitative, exploratory-ethnographic approach, data were collected through participatory observation, in-depth interviews with experienced artisans, and supporting documentation. The findings reveal that the creation of Kolotik inherently involves fundamental mathematical activities such as measuring, designing, locating, and playing. Each stage, from selecting coconut shells to shaping, assembling, and tuning, requires intuitive and contextual applications of mathematical concepts, including plane geometry (rectangles and ellipses), proportionality, similarity, geometric transformations (reflection), and arithmetic sequences for sound arrangement. The study also identifies structured rhythmic patterns in Kolotik performances as evidence of complex mathematical reasoning in local musical traditions. These results affirm the position of ethnomathematics as a bridge between formal mathematics and local culture, providing a concrete foundation for contextual and culturally responsive mathematics education. The study recommends the utilization of these findings as teaching materials to enhance student motivation and understanding, and encourages further research on mathematical patterns in traditional musical notation. This research contributes to the preservation of cultural heritage and the advancement of innovative mathematics education grounded in local wisdom.
